Voiijer
Voiijer, the social platform reconnecting people with the natural world.
The Challenge
Making the telling as exciting as the doing
To succeed, the app had to appeal to two key audiences: the global explorers whose adventures would drive much of the content generation and the millions of nature enthusiasts who might not have time to journey into the Gobi Desert or summit Everest themselves.
To satisfy them both the app had to go beyond existing travel offering and create a new, more immersive way to share a story.
The Project
A real adventure, in the palm of your hand
A curated Instagram post just doesn’t do justice to the real-time ups and downs of an explorer’s journey into the unknown. The Voiijer app hosts traditional media like photos and videos while also allowing more experimental formats such as voice notes and 3D/AR object support. Building on iOS native capabilities like QuickLook for viewing 3D objects in augmented reality, and SceneKit for 3D rendering on the UI, Voiijer’s users can visualize rare fossils or unique species from the comfort of their sofa. This created a form of unfiltered, in-the-moment storytelling which resonated powerfully with Voiijer’s target demographic: the kind of people who believe that life is about the journey, not just the destination.
The Reception
How does a girl grow up and become a professional tree climber?
Once launched, the app became a hit with the world’s leading explorers, scientists and researchers who quickly started using the platform to share their work. Whether it was Meg Lowman encouraging more people to study forest tree canopies, Richard J. Bartlett helping our community navigate the planets or Paul Niel explaining how to uncover a WWII plane wreck, Voiijer saw an outpouring of inspiring content creation and discussion around our natural world.
